NOVEMBER 2008

Air Ivanhoe Limited has purchased and will be operating some of the camps in 2009, and some will be resting in 2009. Most of you are probably familiar with my brother George, his wife Jeanne and son Joel. They will be operating the following camps from Ivanhoe Lake, which is 45 miles east of Chapleau. Bonar Lake, Schewabic Lake, Nemegosenda Riverside, Biggs Lake and Rice Lake. I forwarded all the reservations for 2009 to Air Ivanhoe, who have contacted all parties that have a tentative reservation for 2009. For all other parties Air Ivanhoe will be sending a 2009 brochure in late November or early December. New prices for the camps are already on Air Ivanhoe's website for 2009. I encourage all my customers to patronize Air Ivanhoe Ltd. Contact Air Ivanhoe: 1-800-955-2951 or 1-705-899-2155 ,

I didn't pick the most opportune time to retire with the state of the economy in recent years but I am anyway..I thank all of you who came, especilly those of you who came most every year, some of you for more than 30 years.. I may see you at Ivanhoe Lake, if they need a week-end pilot.

I'll provide some more news in the not too distant future.

September 2008

We finally got some nice weather in August. May, June and July all had above normal precipitation and below seasonal temperatures. The nicest weather of the year was around the Labour Day weekend, but it’s still early September and Fall has settled in already. I only watered my garden once all year and that was August 15th. Nothing grew much except the peas. The plentiful rainfall provided an abundant berry crop so there were no nuisance bears around. They didn’t have to bother the tourists or wander into town for leftovers.

I still haven’t finalized the sale of my business but there’s a good chance someone else will be running the camps next year. I will know for sure in a month or two.

I thank all of you who came this year during these times of economic problems in the United Sates, where most of our customers come from. Hopefully the economies of Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania will start to improve soon and that some of you who haven’t made a trip up here recently will come again. The fishing was pretty good this year despite the not so good weather.

John, Roger, Melissa, Cosmo and Lila (Lila is a 5 month old German Shepherd, the latest addition to the crew).

JUNE 2008

It's officially summer but still doesn't fell like it yet. It's been mostly cool and unsettled all spring. The water level was very high this spring but has been going down slowly. The fish don't seem to mind the weather as they have been biting pretty well. It's past mid-June and still no mayfly hatches yet. The dragonflies are just starting to hatch. Everything is about 2 weeks behind normal proceedings. We won't have to worry about low water levels for a while.

The exchange rate on U.S. currency is still at par. The price of fuel has gone up 30 percent but our rates have remained the same. There will be no fuel surcharge here as many airlines have implemented.

To clarify the boating license requirements mentioned in the April news, the present requirement is actually for anyone born after April 1, 1983 to have a boating certificate. A U.S. coast guard certificate is good. The requirement for everyone else doesn't come into effect until September 15, 2009. It won't be necessary for next year unless you come after mid. September.

The passport requirement will come into effect on or about June 20, 2009. Right now anyone entering the United States just needs photo I.D. and a birth certificate.I think August will be good fishing this year the way it is shaping up. If you're thinking about a trip this year, please give us a call for information. We have the best rates and value for your hard-earned vacation dollar.

Cheers,

John, roger, Kathy, Melissa and Cosmo send regards.

APRIL 2008

Spring is almost here..still snow on the ground and ice on the lakes, but it's only mid-april and opening week isn't for another month..we had a long old-fashioned type winter this year, unlike the mild winters and early springs we started getting used to in recent years...the water levels should be high in may this year, unlike last when they were low in may and high in july.

There are no major changes in Regulations this year ..passports are not required until june,2009..but US residents will need photo id and a birth certificate to get back into the united states this year though..another new reg for '09 will be a requirement for anyone operating an outboard motor to have taken a boating course and posess a certificate of competency..now it only applies to people born after march 30, 1984.

The US and canadian currencies have been around par so far this yeqr and it is not expected that will change very much in the near future..we will put a monthy update on the site to let US residents know what to expect.

There are still openings this year most weeks, if you are contemplating a fishng trip in 08...and if you are already booked, we'll see you soon.

Cheers,

John, roger, Kathy, Melissa and Cosmo send regards.

JANUARY 2008

Winter has been off and on with 3 significant snowfalls but 2 rain events as well..it looks like winter is here now and another 6-8 inches of snow are forecast today, january 17, might be finally enough to groom the snowmobile trails.

The US border crossing requirements have been pushed back to June 2009. This year you will only need photo id and a birth certificate. The US and canadian dollars are at parity currently and not much change is expected soon, according to the "experts".I plan to attend 2 sportshows this year. London, Ontario is February 22-24 and Grand Rapids , Michigan is March 13-16. Hope to see some of you there.

Kathy, Roger, Cosmo and myself all plan to be back in Chapleau May 1 for another fishing season..We hope to see many of you up north this year.

Cheers,

John,

September 2007

Another fishing season is winding down. Fishing and weather were generally good again this year. We had a few hot weeks and a few cool wet ones but temperatures were mostly normal. The water levels started out on the low side in May because there was less snow last winter than usual but the rain started in mid May and by mid July, we had received 10 inches. Since then we have had little rain so the water levels are a bit on the low side now. The river systems fluctuate about four feet but the lakes only around one foot on a normal year.

The exchange rate we gave on the U.S. funds was 5% this year, while the banks were giving around 3%. The currency exchange at the border wasn’t giving any exchange most weeks because they operate on about 5% commission. We did not increase our rates for next year, 2008. The price will be the same in Canadian dollars but the exchange rate could be different.

Roger and his crew did a major face lift to the camp at Rice Lake this year. No running water but it looks better now than it did new in 1976. The walleye fishing has been excellent there for several years now. The lake was stocked with walleye in 1970 and they have taken over, with many in the 20-30 inch range being caught each year.

As it stands now, passports will be required for U.S. visitors to Canada in January 2008. A bill delaying the requirement until July 2009 has passed the house but has not been signed into law yet. I will keep you posted on my web site as to any new developments.

With economic woes in Michigan and Ohio, business isn’t quite what it used to be, but I have to thank my die-hards who come back every year no matter how bad the economy or exchange rate gets. Retirement is still “on-hold” and I fully expect to be back for another season in 2008. If we haven’t seen you for a few years, please come back!

Cheers,

John, Roger, Kathy, Melissa and Cosmo

June 2007

Dear Friends,

Another fishing season is underway. Spring was early again with the lakes ice free by the end of April. Water levels were a little on the low side because of below normal snow fall last winter, but 2 inches of rain in mid-may and another 3 inches in early June have them normal for this time of year. Weather-wise we have had a little of everything so far, from some hot weather in early may to some snow on opening week-end. May fishing was excellent again this year.

  • For U.S. residents the exchange rate is currently 5%.
  • The 7 day rate of $685.00 Canadian is $652.00 U.S.
  • The federal G.S.T is 6% and the Ontario provincial tax is $20.00 per person Canadian.
  • The cost of an 8 day regular fishing license is $41.62.
  • An 8 day conservation license is $24.28 Canadian.

There are no new border crossing requirements this year if you are traveling by road but it looks like passports will be required for 2008. We still have openings most weeks this year if you are thinking about a trip this year, please call us.

Cheers,

John, Roger, Melissa and Cosmo

January, 2007

Dear Friends

Winter is finally here. We had a blast in early December but it fizzled and we had a green Christmas. The fall was wet again last year and the low water levels came back up to normal. More snow is needed for high water in the spring.

There are no changes in border crossing requirements this year if you are arriving by land . It looks like June 2009 before requirements change. No panic for 2 years.

Exchange rate on US funds is going up. It went below 10% last year but is back up around 15% now, if you get the best rate. That's enough to make up for the rate increase, if you book now.

We hope to see many familiar faces and some new ones this year.

Cheers,

John, Roger, Melissa and Cosmo

September, 2006

Dear Friends

The 2006 fishing season is winding down. We had an early spring this year. The lakes were ice free by the end of April and the foliage was out by mid-May, about 2 weeks earlier than normal. The weather was somewhat unsettled this year with the exception of a 2-3 week heat wave in July. After August 20, we had mostly fall type weather with daytime highs in the 60's.

Fishing was generally good this year. Ivanhoe River and the Nemegosenda Lake/ River System had very good fishing. Schewabic and Shiners lakes are producing more smallmouth bass each year. People that came out of Sahler lake this year reported that the lake is still "full of fish".

The exchange rate we gave this year on US funds was 10%. The incremental price increase for '07 is again just enough to cover the rising cost of gas and propane. The 7 day rate of $685 Canadian and the taxes of $60. comes to $745 Canadian. At the current exchange rate, it would be about $675 US. There are no new border crossing requirements for 2007. Right now passports are required for 2008, but could be pushed back to 2009. Everything stays the same for next year anyway - no passports required.

Boating regulations that came into effect about 4 years ago require that anyone born after March 30, 1984 needs to have taken a boating safety course and possess a certificate of competency to operate an outboard motor boat in Ontario. Next year even someone who is 23 years old will have to meet this requirement. Eventually, everyone will require a certificate, but that won't be for a few years.

Cheers,

John, Roger, Kathy and Cosmo.

August 3, 2006

Dear Friends,

The mixed bag of weather continued into early July, then we had a 10 day heat wave. Now it's back to the nice but slightly unsettled weather. Long range forecast shows normal temperatures for the next 2 weeks. By then the weather usually starts cooling down, with shorter days and cooler nights. It's a good time to be in the bush. The larger fish are usually more active when we get into fall weather, if you are thinking about a last minute trip this year or are already planning for next year.

We are still giving 10% exchange on US funds. The 7 day rate of $650. Canadian plus the taxes and fishing license comes to about $680 US.

There is some confusion about impending changes to border crossing requirements. Nothing has changed or will change until at least 2008 and could be delayed until 2009 if the new US secure ID card in development is not ready by next year. So, if you are thinking about a trip in 2007, there is nothing new to be concerned about. We hope to see many familiar faces and some new ones in '07

My "retirement plans" are on hold - Indefinitely. Potential buyers are probably waiting to see how the new US border crossing requirements will affect our industry when they come into effect. Looks like we will all be back for '07.

Cheers,
John

May 30, 2006

Dear Friends,

Spring came early again this year. The lakes were ice-free by the end of April. The spring water levels were higher than they have been in recent years. May weather has been unsettled with some warm dry weather and some cool wet weather - ah well.

May fishing was very good!. As we enter June, the water levels have returned to normal. We still have openings most weeks if you are thinking about a trip this year. There are no new border crossing requirements for at least this year and next, if you are travelling by land.

Roger, Kathy ,Cosmo and John are all back again this year.

John

March 2006

Dear Friends,

We have had more winter weather in February than we did in December and January combined. There is plenty of snow on the ground now. Last summer was one of the driest on record but we had a lot of rain in October and November and the water levels came back up to normal. I expect normal spring levels this year.

There are no changes to the fishing regulations this year. Last year the slot size for walleye was discontinued. The limit is still 4 and only one can be over 18 inches.

The border crossing requirements for US citizens hasn't changed either. The plans to make you need a passport have been dropped. The latest plan is to require a new ID card for 2008 but that could change too, as that's not far away. The exchange rate now is 10% on US currency. The 7 day rate of $650 Canadian is $590. US, still a good deal better than my competitors..

I still have openings for most weeks. I hope to hear from you that are still thinking about coming this year.

Cheers

John

October 2005

The nice weather continued through most of September . The rain finally came in late September and early October with enough to bring the water levels back up close to normal. The weather and fishing between mid- August and late September were both good this year.

The exchange rate on US funds is currently 15%. The seven day rate of $650. Canadian is $565. US. Most of my competitors are substantially higher, but we want your business . It's a competitive environment these days with the number of US visitors declining in recent years. We have quality camps on quality fishing lakes. Why pay more and get less ??

We are going to be back in Chapleau in the spring for another year . Hope to hear from many of you soon and see you "up north" in 2006.

Cheers

John

August 2005

Taking Reservations for 2006.

The weather this year has been a lot warmer and dryer than last year. We have had scant rainfall and the local fire fighters have been very busy and doing a good job of dousing small fires before they become big ones. We have had a few heat waves this summer but the long range forecast for the latter half of August and into September is showing normal temperatures. The fishing has been better than it was last year with the nicer weather. If you are thinking about a fall trip, we have some good possibilities available and would like to hear from you.

Cheers.

John

June 2005

Three weeks of above normal temperatures in April made for an early break-up and run-off.. Coupled with a dry May we are already approaching summer water levels. As I write this in early June, we just had our first significant rainfall of the season. We have had really nice weather for the first few weeks of the season, much better than last year so far and everything is a couple of weeks ahead of the normal as far as water temperatures and fly situations Hope to hear from some of you regarding a last minute fishing trip.

Cheers.

John

March 2005

Dear Friends,

The calendar says it's spring but it doesn't look like it up here. We had a couple of thaws in January but not much has melted since then so there is still three feet of snow on the ground which should be about right to fill up the rivers and lakes in May.

The slot size restriction on walleye has been eliminated. The possession limit is still four but only one can be over 18 inches and the rest must be under 18", or four under 18" is allowed. Now you won't have to throw so many fish back to catch one you can eat.

I have been giving 20% on US funds this winter. At 20% the seven day price of $625. Canadian equals $520. US - still well below most of my competition I still have openings most weeks if you are thinking about a fly-in fishing trip this year. I'll be In Sault Ste. Marie until May 1st and then up in Chapleau.

I hope to see as many of you as possible again this year.

Cheers.

John
